WHY ARIF NIZAMI NEVER STOOD BEHIND THE RIGHTS OF WORKING JOURNALISTS OR EVEN WITHDRAWN STANCE AGAINST 7TH WBA???
The Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists has viewed with concern the removal of another professional editor from the industry in the shape of exit of the Editor, The Nation, Mr Arif Nizami, which sparked a wave of resignations in the organisation.
The incident had created unrest in the media industry and the situation warrants an immediate inquiry into the unceremonious removal or protest resignation of Mr Arif Nizami as the journalist community has raised voice in support of Mr Arif Nizami who rose from a reporter to the slot of an editor.
The journalists’ community lauds the courage of Mr Arif who did not bow to the dictatorial policies of the management of the paper, including its decision not to implement the 7th wage award, and hiring of journalists on meagre wages.
We believed that the contents of the termination letter of Mr. Arif - which says “You are informed not to deal with or to take any instructions from Mr Arif Nizami regarding the business of the newspaper of the company.
The new Editor i.e. Ms Shireen Mazaari has taken charge from today and shall be responsible for the working of the newspaper,” are objectionable & reflects the mind set of Mr. Majeed Nazami, who throughout his life never allowed to the working journalists to freely take part in the trade union activities, formation of unions, raise voice against atrocities and his cruelty policies.
The termination letter also demonstrate that Mr. Majeed Nazami, have no respect of any law, norms, ethics, & such an arbitrary and harsh action exposed his true face – of “cruelness”.
We are of the opinion that newspaper owners should behave like heads of those institutions whose duty themselves is to educate the entire society.
It is regretted that the media owners were not encouraging professional editorship, but they were, in fact, damaging the institution of the editor by appointing weak people on the slot or those who work for their interests.
On his part, we also expects from Mr. Arif Nizami to explain his position why there had been reports in the past against him that being an employer he denied rights to works and that he had been a major and stumbling block in the implementation of the 7th wage award. Moreover, the group in the past had also been used to deny even monthly salaries to its employees or made them to work on negligible per day wages like ordinary workers. Mr. Arif Nizami should also explain while the journalists’ community is continuously struggling and protesting over years and years to get the 7th Wage Board Award implemented, why Mr. Arif Nizami never stood behind them for their right or even withdrawn stance against the implementation of 7th Wage Board Award.
